JAN JELINEK – Kosmischer Pitch (2005, ~scape)

Jan Jelinek je človek mnogih obrazov, saj se je v preteklih letih uspel pri vsaki plošči na novo definirati in nekako prenoviti svoj zvok, ki pa kljub vsemu ostaja dobro prepoznaven in tipično njegov. Ko poslušamo njegove izdelke izpred sedmih let, ko je začenjal s svojo nadvse plodno kariero in jih primerjamo z najnovejšimi projekti, bomo ugotovili, da neka osnovna avtorska predpostavka pri Jelineku ostaja nedotaknjena, spremembe pa se izvajajo na konceptualnih in zvočnih ravneh, ki se od albuma do albuma lahko radikalno razlikujejo. Prve plošče pod imenom Farben je na primer delal z mislijo na nemški koncept besede »tonfarben«, torej zvočnih barv, ki so se skrivale za minimalističnim ozadjem micro-house glasbe. Njegova najbolj znana plošča Loop Finding Jazz Records se je na primer poigravala z drobnimi fragmenti iz njegove zbirke starih vinilk, sodelovanje z japonci Computer Soup in potem še z avstralci Triosk, ga je kasneje izpostavilo interakciji z akustičnim instrumentarijem, nekje vmes pa se je igral še z aluzijo potovanja po ultra-modernih kompozicijah Nemških železnic. Sicer pa so njegovi zadnji albumi merili predvsem v smeri predelav znanih glasbenih klišejev, pri čemer si je na primer sposodil Sun Raja ali pa nekatere post-punskovske izvajalce, ki jih je brez dejanskih zvočnih referenc predelal v svojem značilnem slogu novodobne berlinske elektronike. Tudi tokrat se gre Jelinek podobno igro, le da si je izbral specifično področje progresivcev iz sedemdesetih let, predvsem krautrockerskih zasedb kot so recimo Can ali pa Amon Düül. Njegove predpostavke so tukaj ponovno omejene le na ideologijo nekega zvoka, saj na albumu Kosmischer Pitch ne bomo zaznali niti enega samega referenčnega sempla, kaj šele, da bi se neposredno nanašal na konkretno zvočno podobo omenjenih skupin. Jelineku gre predvsem za občutke, ki jih posreduje nek točno določen zvočni izraz, kar pomeni, da so njegove intervencije v prvi vrsti še vedno novodobne, podton pa je takšen kot ga lahko izkusimo pri poslušanju strarih plošč. Moram priznati, da gre našemu omiljenemu berlinčanu takšno prevajanje občutij zelo dobro od rok, še posebej zaradi tega, ker je velik del instrumentarija odigral sam, vključno s kitarskimi deli, ki na ploščo vnašajo nezmotljiv občutek kozmične psihadelije. Plošča, ki je tako kot običajno izšla pri Betkejevi založbi Scape, je temu primerno zračna, tekoča, intenzivna in vedno prekrita s tanko kopreno prikritega brnenja, ki ustvarja občutek nenehne prisotnosti zvoka, napisanega z velikim Z. Tudi sama imena komadov se pogosto nanašajo na kompozicije iz ortodoksne psihadelične preteklosti, ki jih Jelinek poustvarja brez nepotrebnih zavlačevanj, torej v skorajda ekspresni in zelo zgoščeni obliki. Ker je Jelinek zvočno dinamiko tudi tokrat ustvarjal predvsem z loopanjem in nizanjem različnih slojev zvoka, je učinek dejansko »plazmatičen«, le da ne v nekem retro smislu, ki sicer obvelja za tovrstne podvige. Jelinek besedo retro zanalašč pozabi in jo podzavestno odmisli, saj je še vedno trdno zasidran v konceptih »modernosti«, ki iz preteklih desetletij sicer spoštljivo črpa navdih, a ga prenaša v neko popolnoma novo okolje. Sicer pa bo za Jelineka nov tudi prehod od solo nastopanja s prenosnim računalnikom k skupinskemu koncertiranju z zasedbo Trioks, ki se ima zgoditi letos, v živo pa namerava predstaviti tudi svoj zadnji album. Pri tem se mu bosta pridružila kitarist Andrew Pekler ter bobnar Hanno Leichtmann.

Techno godba se vedno znajde nekje na sredini med arhaičnimi figurami in utopičnim futurizmom, kar se na začetku zdi kot nezdružljivo nasprotje, toda na koncu le odkrijemo, da oba pola ustvarjata edinstven estetski moment, ki je pravzaprav botroval tudi nastanku tega širokega glasbenega žanra. Če na primer pogledamo zgodnje detroitske techno producente, bomo odkrili, da navdiha niso iskali le pri evropskih industrial in disko pionirjih, ampak tudi pri jazzovskih in soulovskih izvajalcih, ki se zdijo popolno nasprotje mašinske glasbe, nastale s pomočjo brezobličnih glasbenih naprav. Če v minimalističnih ritmih najpogosteje slišimo utripanje strojev v tovarnah avtomobilskega mesta, potem bomo zgrešili tisti primordialni element, ki techno glasbo prek številnih generacij povezuje z njenimi koreninami. Če počasi raziskujemo nazaj, bomo nedvomno prišli do tradicionalnih afriških polifoničnih muzik, ki so pri številnih producentih slišane še dandanes, le da se je njihova uporaba geografsko preselila v Evropo in Ameriko. Če pomislimo, je v techno glasbi afriških producentov zelo malo, saj jih lahko dobesedno preštejemo na prste ene roke, še posebej v polju čistokrvne techno glasbe. Avtor albuma Version je torej eden redkih avtentičnih avtorjev, saj prihaja iz revnih predelov Capetowna v Južnoafriški republiki, njegova kariera pa se je koncem osemdesetih let začela v ilegalnih barakarskih barih, ki hkrati služijo tudi kot občasni klubi. Pod močnim vplivom apartheitske represije je Alan Abrahams na začetku devetdesetih let pri lokalni založbi Teal Truetone Records izdal svoj prvi album Dance For Freedom. Plošča je bila časovno usklajena s prvimi demokratičnimi volitvami v Južni Afriki, po glasbeni plati pa je združevala podzemne house ritme in tradicionalne afriške pesmi. Leta 1997 se je Abrahams preselil v London, kjer je začel s serijo klubskih večerov pod imenom Mahala ter navezal stike s Sutekhovo založbo Context Free Media pri kateri je izdal svojo prvo odmevnejšo malo ploščo. Kasneje so sledile še objave pri založbah Background, Karot in Sound Variation, nekaj malih plošč je izdal pri njegovi lastni založbi Süd Electronic ter seveda pri berlinski Scape, ki je objavila tudi njegov drugi album Version. Vmes se je Abrahams intenzivno posvečal nastopanju, saj je prepotoval domala vse kontinente in na svoji poti tudi sestavil veliko večino zvočnega materiala. Pravi, da je njegov dom ob soju prenosnega računalnika, kjerkoli se pač že znajde, zato tudi sinonim Portable. Sicer pa je album Version povečini sestavljen iz terenskih posnetkov prostranstev njegove južnoafriške domovine, ki jih je Abrahams sestavil v funkcionalne techno in house komade, ki pa po pravilu mejijo bolj na ekeperimentalni rob obeh žanrov. Rezultat je neverjetno organski in zaokrožen zvok, saj za komadi stoji cela vrsta bolj in manj starih zvočnih zapisov, ki pomnijo trenutke v pragozdu, pri zakurjenem ognjišču ali pa preprosto povzemajo tradicionalne afriške ritme, ki so prevedeni v mašinsko govorico novodobnega techna. V tem smislu se skozi uporabo digitalnega programja ohranja nekaj izvorne identitete teh zvočnih virov iz šestdesetih, sedemdesetih in osemdesetih let prejšnjega stoletja, ki se v hipu pojavijo in prav tako hitro tudi izginejo v splošni zvočni sliki albuma Version. Torej, akustična različica novodobne techno godbe, ki bi jo lahko zlahka označili kot dovršeni afro-futurizem v najboljšem pomenu te besede.

DAPAYK & PADBERG – Close Up (2005, Mo's Ferry Prod.)

Producentskih parov smo v domeni elektronske glasbe videli že kar nekaj, od Dani Siciliano in Matthewa Herberta, Antye Greye Fuchs in Vladislava Delaya, pa do Susanne Brokesch in Abrahama Duqua, s čimer pa seznam še zdaleč ni zaključen. Ampak očitno se tovrstna sodelovanja dobro obnesejo, saj smo iz njihovih naslovov običajno dobili odlične plošče, ki so praviloma bolj intenzivne in bolj domišljene kot solistična dela posameznih avtorjev. Če že ne drugače, so sodelovanja življenjskih partnerjev prepredena z neke vrste intimnostjo in samoumevnostjo, ki na zelo eleganten način združi estetske zahteve obeh avtorjev, najpogosteje producenta in vokalistke. To sicer malce zruši predstavo o univerzalnosti elektronske glasbe, ki naj bi se po enakopravnosti spolov razlikovala od ostalih popularno glasbenih zvrsti, saj z brezoblično podobo studijskega manipulanta nečeloma ne razlikuje med moškimi in ženskami. V resnici je situacija pogosto drugačna, saj je producentk še vedno relativno malo, malce bolj pogumno pa se dekleta lotevajo le še didžejskih poslov. Ampak pri duetu Dapayk in Padberg so stvari še malce bolj komplicirane, ali pa recimo temu emancipirane, saj se je Dapayk znašel v podrejenem položaju v primerjavi s svojo sopotnico Evo Padberg, ki je v zadnjih letih obveljala za eno od najbolj obetavnih nemških manekenk. Njen urnik je razdeljen med New Yorkom in Berlinom, glasba pa je le neke vrste fakultativna dejavnost, ki jo počne bolj za zabavo kot zares. Po pravici povedano je njuno sodelovanje zaradi tega še toliko bolj razigrano, saj nista obremenjena s problemi eksistence, ampak se stvari zares posvečata iz zabave. Poleg tega se z Dapaykovimi dolgoletnimi snemalnimi izkušnjami izogneta kakšnemu dilentantizmu in amaterstvu, kar pomeni, da njuno muziko sestavljajo poskočni tech – house ritmi, ki jim uspe združiti eksperiment in plesno pripravnost, po drugi strani pa nežnejšo in subtilno noto komadom dajejo presenetljivo spedenani vokali Eve Padberg. Sicer pa je vsaj v producentskem smislu gonilna sila dueta Niklas Worgt, ki ga pod sinonimom Dapayk poslušamo zadnjih nekaj let, prej se je skrival pod imeni Sonstware ter Persona Non Grata, letos pa je na prizorošče stopil še njegov najnovejši projekt Marek Bois, namenjen izključno techno glasbi. Na začetku se je Dapayk ukvarjal predvsem z lomljenimi ritmi in drum'n'bass godob, kasneje pa je usmeritev spremenil v house in tech-house muzike, čemur je nedvomno botrovala tudi njegova selitev v Berlin. Z Evo Padberg sta v studijsko španovijo stopila pred tremi leti, manekenka pa je že od sredine devetdesetih let naprej skrbela za grafično podobo številnih plošč, ki so izšle pri Mo's Ferry. Na koncu je torej v Worgtovi družbi poleg designerskih izživela tudi svoje predstave o elektronski glasbi, ki niti niso tako napačne. Plošča Close Up je v prvi vrsti sicer izrazito plesna, toda za tech-hopuse ritmi se vedno skriva kakšna mutacija in kakšen obrnjen koncept, kar se mi zdi, da je nasploh značilno za založbo Mo's Ferry Productions. Seveda se porajajo primerjave z Dani Siciliano, ki je na tem področju skorajda merodajna, toda zdi se mi, da je Dapayku in Padbergovi kljub vsemu uspelo zbežati tistemu značilnemu vokalnemu micro-house klišeju, ki se ga velika večina producentov poslužuje v zadnjem času. Ne vem, če k temu pripomore predvsem Dapaykov glasbeni karakter ali pa neverjetna energija, ki jo Eva Padberg kaže tudi pri živih nastopih.
